Bandh Gale ka Coat
An approximate translation of this work of fabric is a “coat with a closed (Mandarin) collar.” Namrata takes this outfit from the 10th Century and crafts it into the jacket that became synonymous with the first Prime Minister of independent India – Jawaharlal Nehru. Thus, often called the “Jawahar Coat,” the outfit is made of many different kinds of fabric and represents India in its glory and pride. The artisans and tailors that Namrata works with would take the vibrant silks, and craft them into the coat that is now used by both men and women. The versatility of the fabric, the uniqueness of the design, and all of the creativity of Namrata comes through in a garment that not only retains the national significance of the coat but moulds it to fit the new India in the traditional achkan.
